Printing presses

While small printing presses used for woodcuts are relatively widespread, the dwarves innovated use of large printing presses in conjunction with moveable typeface. Moveable typeface was naturally a dwarvish invention, owning to their familiarity with lead, mechanisms, and the dwarvish languages' simple runic characters. The popularity of the dwarven printing press took off when a clever engineer modified a runic typeface so it could be used for common words. This was first used to print "Truth and Light," a holy book for followers of Solina.

This new form of printing was both cheap and fast, drastically cutting costs. Books became an obtainable luxury for common folk, improving literacy across Ataland. As the number of readers increased so too did the number of writers, and many make a decent living as full-time authors.

Newspapers

Originally newspapers started out as simple newssheets. Newssheets were a way of getting money for old rope. Printed on pulped scrap paper during the press' downtime, the simple leaflets contained local news, rumors and happenings. The newssheets sold well. What started as a way to reduce losses increasingly became a major source of revenue. Seizing on this business opportunity presses started to specifically seek out stories to print as news.

Newspapers are now essential reading for those involved in politics, as well as anyone who considers themselves well informed. Normally costing only 1 cp, even the not well-off afford a glimpse at the wider goings on in Ataland.

A single press can supply their newspaper to dozens of nearby settlements. Papers are shipped as bulk packages and sold to Paper Sellers (typically migrant workers) who sell the papers off individually in town squares and streets. Sellers can return old and unsold papers for pulping to get a discount.
