Factions
Astrus
The largest and most powerful faction in Ataland.
Astrus grew its wealth quickly by exploiting its natural resources and trading with the other factions. It was the first faction to open its borders to trade again after the Great Faction War.
Astrus is friendly with its much smaller island neighbor, Tesmela. It shares a disputed land border with Geflus.
More Information.Broaye
A large libertarian faction.
Despite it's size, Broaye has few large urban settlements and is mostly sprawling semi-lawless wilds. As such, Broaye's trade routes are plagued by raiders and adventurers can find work easily.
Broaye's central government is small and lacks significant political influence, allowing its towns to largely govern themselves. After the Great Faction War, with no external threat to unite the settlements, infighting over resources is commonplace.
Broaye's closet ally is Coskiura, with who it shares mutual trade and protection agreements.
More Information.Coskiura
An important trading faction.
Coskiura was the first faction to start building ships again after the colonization of Ataland. It serves as a hub for trading - with goods passing through Coskiura between factions that wouldn't ordinarily trade directly.
Coskiura is friendly with most other factions but has particularly strong ties with Broaye.
More Information.Driaca
A small elven haven.
Driaca is the only faction with a majority elven population. The people of Driaca are very well contented with their beautiful island and are blessed with fair and effective governance.
Driaca doesn't care much for the affairs of the other factions, preferring to keep to themselves.
More Information.Ebrana
A relativity new faction, awash with political intrigue.
The island of Ebrana was for was originally disputed between the factions of Astrus, Broaye, and Geflus. As part of the Treaty of Ataland, this new independent faction was created. The treaty itself was signed in the City of Meltford.
The City of Meltford is a political hotbed. Linages of nobles attempt to position their kin in important roles in order to gain wider influence across Ataland. Getting involved in their plots could be a deadly gamble. Outside it's borders the other factions keep a close eye. If a major war were to break out again, Ebrana would likely be the first battlefield.
More Information.Geflus
A warlike and deeply paranoid faction.
Its leaders are inspired by the teachings of the god Xor, the war king. Many of the citizens of Geflus feel the Treaty of Ataland has unfairly curbed the faction's growth and wealth.
Even in these times of peace, Geflus frequently clashes with the faction of Astrus with which it shares a land-border. It has also long been rumored Geflus funds and profits from pirates who prey on the merchants of other factions.
More Information.Jatrad
A small but influential faction. Its capital, The City of Abingend, is the third biggest settlement in Ataland.
Jatrad was originally part of Astrus but seceded in the early days of the great faction war. Despite this history, Jatrad and Astrus maintain a cordial, if frosty, relationship.
More Information.Kestiobar
A soloian theocracy.
The Kestobar territories are entirely controlled by the church of Solos, with the church writing both religious and civil law. Here the clerics of Solos have total power to implement their interpretations of Solo's commandments.
As a strictly henotheisic state, worship of gods other than Solos is illegal, with slim exceptions for visitors. See Religious Discrimination in Kestiobar for more information.
Kestobar once tried to completely convert Driaca to soloism. Although they failed, soloism still has a strong presence on Driaca to this day.
More Information.Tesmela
The smallest faction in Ataland.
Tesmela has few valuable resources and is not in a strategically important location. In fact, this is the reason it still exists to this day - no faction considered it worth invading.
These days, Tesmela is in all but name part of Astrus. The Tesmela faction command works in conjugation with Astrus to ensure its independence, while taking full advantage of its larger allies' influence and power.
More Information.Unaligned
These settlements are unaligned with any faction, even if they lie inside a faction's borders.
Unaligned settlements are usually lawless and attract brigands and other ne'er-do-wells. There are a few civilized unaligned, usually small outlying villages that remained politically neutral for historical reasons.
