Enlistee
"I solemnly swear to keep the peace, to enforce the laws justly, and to defend the vulnerable against all threats." -- The watchman's oath.
You were either a solider, guard or watchman. You were trained to fight, but you were never trained to watch your comrades die. Maybe this hardened your character, maybe it still haunts you to this day.
Work with the Game Master to figure out the details of your enlistment. Which organization did you serve and for how long? Did you fight in a major battle? Did you guard a famous person?
Skill Proficiencies: Intimidation, Athletics
Tool Proficiencies: Vehicles (land)
Weapon Proficiencies: Any martial melee weapon or Muskets
Equipment: Any martial melee weapon, 4 rations, A backpack, Common clothes, and 2d6 (7) gp.
Feature: Honorable discharge
You served honorably and were discharged. You still retain your rank and accolades, although you now lack any actual authority. You have earned the trust of your former organization and they are inclined to help you if they can. Most often this is in the form of council, information of strategic importance, or simply the ear of its leaders.
Alternate Feature: Traitor
You can take this feature instead of Honorable discharge.
You failed to follow orders and were given a dishonorable discharge or even abandoned your post. By disobeying orders you became a traitor to your organization and hero to some opposed group. The group that considers you a hero will assist you where they can, especially in hiding you from your former masters.
Work with the Game Master to figure out what orders you disobeyed, why, and who benefited from your inaction.
Example: Your were ordered to attack the citizens of a small village but warned them of the attack instead.
Alternate Feature: Once a copper, always a copper
If you were a watchman, you can take this feature instead of Honorable discharge.
Watchmen have a very close relationship with their retired ranks. Even in a completely different part of the country the status of former watchman will ingratiate you with the local watch. Strictly off the record, watchmen will provide you with confidential information on local criminals, gang activities, active investigations, and suspects.
If you are close to home, watchmen will likely overlook your minor crimes. However the GM may decide to withdraw all the advantages this feature confers in the face of repeated lawlessness, or if you are caught committing a serious crime. Use cautiously.
Characteristics
Those with a history of enlistment are a loyal and regimented. They often still live by their oath of enlistment, even years after discharge. Their personal honour is tied to their self-worth and often a driving force in their lives. Enlistees normally start off as quite idealistic, though many struggle to keep this idealism in the face of the realities of their service.
